Thefts from residences and from cars rose last year, but there was a decline in the number of car thefts.

Information tabled by the Minister of Home Affairs, Tonio Borg, shows that there were 775 thefts from residences last year, from 677 in 2003. The rate of thefts was marginally higher in 2000, when there were 779 reported thefts.

The number of car thefts declined to 796 last year. There were 1,045 car thefts in 2000, declining to 702 by 2002 before rising to 881 in 2003.

Thefts from cars reached 3,401 last year from 3,211 in 2003. Thefts peaked at 3,728 in the year 2000. The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Noel Farrugia (MLP).
