The number of licensed motor vehicles at the end of March stood at 272,289, of which 205,728, or 75.6 per cent, were private vehicles and 44,704, or 16.4 per cent, were commercial, the National Statistics Office said.
New licences issued in the first quarter of this year totalled 3,023. Private vehicles accounted for 2,145 new licences, or 71 per cent of the total.
In the quarter under review, private vehicles falling within Class 1 (1,300cc) registered the highest increase. This class accounted for 1,272 new licences in January-March, while vehicles in Class 2 (1,301-1,449cc) accounted for 364.
Compared to the fourth quarter of last year, the total number of newly licensed motor vehicles registered an increase of 285, or 10.4 per cent.
