Jesmond Mugliett, Minister of Youth and the Arts, said there was an increase in the number of girls taking part in this year's sailing sessions of SkolaSport Sajf and their number was now almost equal to that of boys.
What was even more heartening was that the children were encouraging their parents to take up the sport, he added.
He was speaking when he visited the Vikings Sailing Cub at Marsamxett, which is organising sailing for SkolaSport.
Sailing instructors Charles Vella and John Sammut said they were pleased with the number of participants in the sailing sessions at the club.
Sailing sessions were becoming ever more popular with Maltese children, they said.
There are some 70 young participants taking part in SkolaSport Sajf, which is organised by the Maltese Council for Sports and sponsored by Kellogg's.
Its aim is to offer children and youngsters the opportunity to keep themselves physically active during the summer months, and to encourage them to discover and practise new sports disciplines.
SkolaSport Sajf sessions are held every week throughout the summer and run till the end of September.
