Immigrants being held in detention at the Safi and Hal Far barracks have gone on a hunger strike.

They started refusing food on Thursday in protest against prolonged detention and in solidarity with other immigrants at Ta' Kandja who started a hunger strike on Monday.

Sources close to the Ta' Kandja detention centre said some of the immigrants who started the hunger strike on Monday have stopped the strike but some 20 are still refusing food.

The immigrants who are being held pending the processing of their application with the UNHCR for refugee status; are awaiting an appeal after their application was rejected; or had their application rejected and are waiting to be repatriated.

The current hunger strike is the third by illegal immigrants since December.
