More libraries given over to councils

Local Government Minister Austin Gatt yesterday presided over the signing of an agreement with 10 local councils for the devolution of public libraries and other property.

Dr Gatt said that since 1998, cabinet had decided in favour of policies encouraging devolution and subsidiarity.

So far there were 41 public properties and 39 public libraries being administered by local councils.

A classical example of how this policy could work in favour of citizens was an abandoned property in Tarxien which had now been restored and turned into a scouts centre, he said.
