Recent data compiled by WasteServ Malta Ltd clearly show that more people are participating in the waste separation scheme by using bring-in sites.
In December, WasteServ collected 26,360 kg of paper, 6,680 kg of plastic, 4,740 kg of metal cans and 11,600 kg of glass, all of which are being directed towards recycling.
When comparing the difference between July and December, the figures show an increase of 75% in paper, 49% in plastic, 74% in metal and 75% in glass.
These data are encouraging and show that a substantial number of householders readily co-operate when facilities for disposal of recyclable waste are made available.
Bring-in sites are available in Birkirkara, Pembroke, Swieqi, Sliema, Marsascala, St Paul's Bay, San Gwann, Marsaxlokk, Safi, Rabat, Zebbug, Mosta, Valletta, Lija, Balzan and Naxxar.
Apart from these localities, another 18 local councils have applied for recycling bins to be installed in their area.
As opposed to these positive participation rates, irresponsible dumping of garbage bags and bulky waste next to the bring-in sites has also been reported in recent months. Despite the fervent call for waste separation and the additional expense incurred by Government, vandalism and littering by certain individuals still occurs.
Bring-in sites are not intended for bulky waste even if these are made of recyclable material; nor should they be used by shops and outlets.
These facilities are specifically designed for householders to dispose of recyclable waste within the containers themselves and not outside the bring-in sites.
In its ongoing educational Progett Skart campaign, WasteServ intends to keep householders informed on how to use the bring-in sites more effectively so as to keep improving recycling performance and to reduce abuse of these facilities throughout this New Year.
WasteServ is also taking all necessary measures to make sure that the bring-in sites are emptied as often as is required. Future plans include the introduction of more bring-in sites in more localities and other recycling schemes through private initiatives.
Each fraction of waste is collected individually and taken to Sant'Antnin waste treatment plant where it is further sorted and taken for recycling.
Assistance for those wanting to recycle their waste or wanting to report anything regarding bring-in sites is provided on freephone 800-7-2200.
