Most of the batches of chocolate affected by the Mars recall have not yet made it to Malta, official distributors Francis Busuttil and Sons said.

“There are very few items from the batches in question that have already been circulated in the market,” a company spokesman said.

The Mars company said on Tuesday it would be recalling chocolate in 55 countries, including Malta, as a precautionary measure after a woman found a small piece of red plastic in a Snickers bar in Germany last month.

The plastic pieces could pose a choking hazard in what is believed to be a one-off.

No such reports have been made in Malta, the spokesman said, but added that the company would be recalling a selection of Snickers, Mars, Milky Way and Celebrations chocolate as a precaution.

The Mars bar being recalled has an October 16 'best-before' date, while the smaller bar with 'best-before' dates of September 11 and October 9 has also been recalled. The Snickers mini with July 17 and July 31 expiry dates is on the recall list as well.

As for the Celebration confectionery, it comes in an egg-shaped container with a July 24 best-before date, a diamond-shaped one with July 4 and 24 dates and one in a bottle package and dated June 26.

Consumers who come across any of these chocolate products are to return them to the place of purchase.
