A big crowd turned out this morning for the funeral of Mario Dimech, who gave his heart and, ultimately, his life for the town's feast.

Mr Dimech, 41, died in the massive explosion at the 15th August fireworks factory on Friday afternoon. He was an enthusiastic member of the fireworks society and used to spend long hours at the factory.

This morning's funeral started with a cortège down High Street led by the Mosta bands. All societies of Mosta were represented.

There were emotional scenes as the people applauded and threw flowers as the coffin was carried past.

Mosta Church was packed and overflowing with mourners, who were led by Mrs Dimech, the victim's mother.

Acting Prime Minister Tonio Borg led the mourners, who included MPs from both sides of the House.
