On November 9 a delegation from Lily of the Valley Girls' Secondary School, Mosta, made up of the headmistress, Ms M.D. Aquilina, and Joe Vella Caruana, assistant head and project co-ordinator, travelled to Messina in Sicily to discuss and finalise the aim and set-up of the Comenius project called "Sights, Sounds and Smells of the Mediterranean", which is to be produced by the students of the Mosta school, of the Scuola Media G. Martino of Messina and of the Francesc Carros College of Valencia, Spain.
This project is under the auspices of the European Union Programmes Unit of the Education Unit and is partially sponsored by Marsovin Ltd.
Together with their counterparts from Valencia, the two Maltese school officials were hosted to a welcome dinner at the Agriturismo Ereno, Larederia, in Messina, which was attended by most of the staff of the Messina school.
During their stay they were also invited to the Palazzo Zanca to meet the mayor, Salvatore Leonardi, and Piero Alibardi, alderman for education.
To introduce the project through the music of Sicily, Spain and Malta, a folk evening was organised at the Messina school hall, attended by the students, parents and guests.
On the last whole day at Messina, a farewell lunch was held at the school premises, where the Maltese delegation met Dr Gustavo Ricevuto, a senior provincial official. Apart from the various working sessions attended to establish the criteria and final product of the project, they were also taken to visit many other institutions and sights.
This was a very fruitful visit because apart from the launching of the project, it served to establish an everlasting friendship among the three schools. In fact a delegation from the G. Martino school and from the Francesc Carros college will be visiting Malta in February, as a continuation of the work already started.
