Moulin Rouge kicks off this weekend

Moulin Rouge, the remaking of Baz Luhrmann's spectacular musical, will this weekend kick off on a six-night run at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.

Staged by leading dance company YADA, the lavish musical will be staged on April 26 and 30, and between May 1 and 4.

The spectacle will bring to life the Oscar-nominated film and the infamous bordello in one of the greatest love stories ever told.

It is a simple, sometimes naïve story, based on a primary myth set in a world that is distant, exotic and yet familiar.

With its Orphean plot moulded in the likeness of a tragic 19th century novel, Moulin Rouge is set in the heightened interpretation of end-of-century Paris.

Enter a fantastic world where nothing is forbidden and everything is possible - the world of Moulin Rouge is taking real human form, pure theatrics and extreme action.

The whole stylistic premise has been to decode what the Moulin Rouge was to the audiences of 1899 and express the same thrill and excitement in a way to which contemporary theatre can relate.

Moulin Rouge is one of the most expensive productions to be staged, with an en-masse cast, tons of magnificent costumes, meticulous detail and multi-dimensional dancing.

In the recent past, YADA staged well-acclaimed productions such as Dirty Dancing and Madonna - The Dance Show.
