New Mount Carmel tech centre to help patients connect, prepare for reintegration

Health Minister hails initiative that will improve patients' quality of life

Patients at Mount Carmel Hospital will be able to access the internet securely and learn digital skills to prepare them for reintegration into the community following the inauguration of a new technology centre.

The Connected Living and Inclusion Centre, or CLiC for short, was developed by staff at Mount Carmel Hospital and inspired by a proposal from President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca through a collaboration between the National Mental Health Services and the Malta Trust Foundation.

The Malta Information Technology Agency provided the computers and other equipment which patients will be able to use “under appropriate supervision”.

Patients will be able to communicate with their families, manage personal administrative matters online and develop their digital skills.

CLiC will also provide a dedicated space for clinicians and occupational therapists to deliver training that promotes greater independence and prepares patients for successful reintegration into the community.

Speaking at the inauguration, Health Minister Ian Borg highlighted the government’s commitment to continue investing in initiatives that improve patients’ quality of life.

“This space has undergone a complete transformation. What was once an outdated area has now been transformed into a centre that offers new opportunities for all those who will use it in the years ahead. Such initiatives, built on collaboration, make a tangible difference and continue to improve people's quality of life,” Borg said.

The centre follows the opening of two new wards in May, replacing two older wards that will also be refurbished.
