Nationalist MP Robert Arrigo has insisted in parliament that it made no sense to buld commercial establishments on top of the planned car park at Qui-si-Sana, saying that the space should only be a garden.

Speaking on the adjournment, Mr Arrigo said that the parking situation in Sliema had become more acute since the transport authority unilateraly removed parking spaces in certain streets. He called for the reopening of talks between the ADT and the Sliema local council.

Four major projects were underway in the Qui-si-Sana area, he said, and his appeal was for them to be concurrent so as to minimise the inconnvenience.

The residents, he said, were not against any car park but against a car park which was being built through the Commuted Parking Scheme but the use of which could be changed. It did not make sense to have more commercial outlets in the surrounding gardens.

The Qui-si-Sana area stood to have more development than thought of five years ago and another consultation process with the residents should be held. A residents' reserved parking zone was promised and should be provided.

Mr Arrigo appealed for the ADT, the local council and Mepa to collaborate so that projects would cause the least inconvennience possible. The residents had a right to be consulted, he said.
