Christian Peregin spoke to MPs from both sides of the House to get their first reaction.

Nationalist MPs

Jesmond Mugliett

I think the proposal was very unexpected and caught a lot of people unawares. I also think there should be a free vote in Parliament.

Ċensu Galea

I don't want to comment at this stage. This is a subject which can be populist but still needs to be considered.

Beppe Fenech Adami

We have the parliamentary group tomorrow, so we'll see then. I have nothing against a discussion about problems facing the Maltese but I will vote against divorce.

Joe Falzon

In principle, I agree that if there's a motion we should discuss it and take a vote. I'd rather wait for the debate to comment.

Francis Zammit Dimech

I think Dr Pullicino Orlando is exercising his right as an MP to present a motion.

Edwin Vassallo

I have no comments to make.

Tonio Fenech

As far as I know, our parliamentary group does not have the mandate to introduce divorce in this country.

George Pullicino

I am against divorce. I don't think it's the solution. I think the biggest efforts should be made to strengthen marriage. Other people can have different opinions and I respect that but this is my opinion.

Labour MPs

Alfred Sant

It's a big shame that an issue that is so important fell in the hands of someone politically and morally corrupt.

Owen Bonnici

I think this is a very important and sensitive subject and his proposal came as a surprise. I agree with strong marriage but I feel divorce is one of the tools to give a second chance to those who have had broken marriages for a while.

Evarist Bartolo

This is very interesting and I will vote in favour. But I have my doubts if this is the right strategy. What worries me is that the Bill may end up setting us back, if it doesn't get enough support. I don't think this is a government strategy to use Dr Pullicino Orlando in this way. I think this was his reaction to the Church's comments on cohabitation and Holy Communion. When the Church says don't come to eat at my house, it's a slap in the face.

Michael Falzon

I think we have to wait for the debate but I think the time is ripe. However, we can either do like some states in America, where you can get divorced immediately after marriage, or have a law that reflects today's social realities.

Joe Debono Grech

I have no comment to make.

George Vella

Let it come to Parliament and we'll discuss it. At the moment, I think it's best not to say anything.

Leo Brincat

I was always in favour of divorce, so I welcome it. But I want to pass judgment after reading the whole Bill. This is not an ideological issue, so it doesn't bother me that someone from the opposing party raised it.

Anthony Zammit

I think divorce is something difficult. Catholics can't accept to divorce. But what bothers me is that rich people can get a divorce abroad and it is accepted in Malta and people without money do not have that right. It's discriminatory and not right.
