A prominent niche on a one-storey house in Valletta Road, Mqabba, with a statue of St Joseph dating back to 1891, has been restored with the help of HSBC Malta.

The niche is included on one of the four heritage routes recommended by the local council.

Mqabba mayor Noel Galea said such niches were characteristic features of architectural value but unless they were maintained and restored they risk being lost forever.

"This is a costly task we would not have been able to do without the necessary funding," he said.
