The chairman of the Malta Resources Authority, Anthony Rizzo, confirmed today that the Authority had received an application from Gasco/Liquigas for an increase in the price of bottled gas.

He did not say how much the requested increase amounts to and said the Authority is considering the request on the basis of product and transport costs.

Mr Rizzo was asked for his comments during a press conference about energy saving schemes launched by the MRA. He could not say when a decision would be taken, but indicated it would be less than three months.

Gas cylinder prices rose twice in recent months, to jump to €10.50 for a 12kg gas cylinder from €5.40 when prices were heavily subsidised by the government.

Recent press reports suggested that the price could rise to between €13 and €15 per cylinder.
