Msida Creek bridge to open to traffic on Sunday
Works will begin on Msida's new town square, across the parish church
The bridge connecting the two parts of Msida will open to traffic on Sunday.
The bridge, part of the Msida Creek project, connects a part of the Ta’ Xbiex sea front, in front of Msida’s parish church, to the opposite side of the marina.
“The project aims to reconnect both sides of Msida, which have been divided for many years,” Transport Minister Chris Bonett said.
Beneath the bridge, the first sections of the canal, designed to prevent flooding in the area for which Msida is notorious, are visible.
Bonett gave the updates on Friday morning during a site visit to the Infrastructure Malta-run project.
He said that once the bridge is officially open, workers will begin constructing Msida's new town square, planned in front of the parish church.
Local events, such as the locality’s feast of St Joseph, have already taken place in this open space, which is currently a construction site, and Bonett said they were a success.
Cars coming from Ta' Xbiex will pass from here from Sunday. The minister acknowledged that the area is prone to flooding but expressed hope that excess rainfall will be channelled through rather than flooding the streets.
On the other side of Msida Creek, works are continuing on the flyover, which is scheduled to open by the end of the year.
Earlier this month, the final steel beam was installed.
