As everybody knows, the heavy rains of September 15 flooded many parts of our island, unfortunately causing heavy damage.

One such place was Valley Road, in Msida. The rains actually started on the night of September 14. However, for residents in Valley Road the nightmare did not end when the rain stopped as ever since then our road has been wet and messy due to overflowing drainage. This is normal almost after every rainfall but not for so long.

Our cars are filthy. There is no point in washing them. It is hazardous to open a window for some "fresh" air because of the foul smell and also the possibility of insects entering our homes.

One should also think of those who have to make it on foot, wading in the dirty water and running the risk of getting splashed by inconsiderate motorists.

One summer's day, way back in the early 1970s, we had a similar experience for the first time. We contacted the then public works department and spoke to one of the architects whose reply to our complaint was that they were aware of the problem. Over 30 years later the problem still exists. Is this the 21st century we are living in, one may ask?
