An Msida man of Libyan origin was yesterday charged with trying to seriously injure a Libyan man with a pointed instrument and with slightly injuring him on the head last Thursday.

Faiz Omar Elsallak, 34, pleaded not guilty to trying to seriously injure Emad Mohammed Mowal at about 10.30 p.m. and slightly injuring him.

He also pleaded not guilty to the possession of a pointed instrument without a licence and at the time of the commission of the crime.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman heard Mowal explain that on the night of the accident he was drinking in a bar with some friends when a fight between Elsallak and another man broke out outside. Mowal said he intervened to stop the fight and Elsallak, who was carrying a knife, hit him on the head with it.

At the end of yesterday's sitting Elsallak was granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm800.

Police Inspectors Carmelo Bartolo and Joseph Mercieca prosecuted.

Dr Franco Debono appeared for Elsallak.
