Msida flyover will open for traffic at midnight

Works started in November 2024 and it has been completed on time

The new traffic flyover in Msida was inaugurated by the prime minister on Wednesday morning, marking the completion of one of the most important components of the Msida Creek project.

It will open for traffic at midnight.

Work on the flyover started in November 2024 and the first of its six giant steel spans was laid in April.

The flyover is aimed at easing traffic flow from Pieta and Msida towards Tal-Qroqq.

Infrastructure Malta said the road corridor extending from the Sa Maison area of Pieta to the Tal-Qroqq Skatepark roundabout is one of the country’s principal network nodes. Over 4,500 vehicles go through the Msida Creek  junction every hour.

The new 200-metre long flyover links Marina Street with Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street (the regional road).

The Msida Creek Project also includes an underground stormwater system to alleviate the area’s flooding problem, a 300m water canal, a new bridge that takes traffic across the creek from the Ta'Xbiex area and a new square in front of the church.

Speaking during the inauguration, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Chris Bonett said this was not only an infrastructure project, but a project developed with the community in mind.

"We have reached a milestone of a project that many doubted and feared wouldn't work," he said. This was a project truly "made in Malta" because it was not only designed locally but also funded locally.

Prime Minister Robert Abela also underlined the community aspect of the project, saying it would provide new open spaces for the community.

He hailed the fact that the works were done by Maltese companies, including the fabrication of the steel spans of the flyover.

Abela also praised Infrastructure Malta and the Infrastructure Ministry for their excellent project management.

"I still remember when the contract was awarded, and how many advised us not to start the project straight away as we would cause traffic congestion," he said.
