The Malta Tourism Authority has welcomed the introduction of the new littering regulations and has expressed the hope they will be fully enforced.

Feedback from tourists clearly indicated that the general lack of cleanliness, and particularly the dumping of waste in urban and rural areas, gave a very negative image of Malta, the MTA said.

It pledged its support for all those involved in efforts to curb this "scourge", which it said threatened the livelihood of the thousands of Maltese who work in tourism.

The new regulations provide for steep fines for those caught littering and dumping. Warnings will be served until January, when the new fines will then come into effect.
