Dr Godwin Ganado Primary School in Mtarfa was alive with children singing and talking in different languages before undertaking a fund-raising marathon walk to celebrate European Languages Day.

The pupils displayed European flags, sang the popular Frere Jacques in French and a prayer song in Spanish at a special assembly.

The older pupils greeted the audience in Maltese, English, Italian, German, French and Spanish, and also recited the months in Italian and presented the traditional Italian game Giro, giro tondo.

The pupils were then joined by the school staff for the annual marathon walk to raise funds for the school. The marathon walk is also intended as an educational activity for the pupils to teach them more about the locality and environment in which they live.

The teachers prepared different activities for pupils according to their age, focusing on pedestrian behaviour, keeping the environment clean and the historical heritage of their town.

The day was a success and thanks to the collective effort of parents, staff, pupils and sponsors Lm530 was collected and will go towards the purchase of display tables for classrooms and display boards for exhibitions.
