A major project has been under way at Marija Bambina Primary School, Mellieha, this scholastic year. This ambitious project - taken in hand on the initiative of the headteacher, Mr Joe Abela, and with the approval of the school council and staff - consisted of the setting up of a multi-functional room which caters for the Science and Technology and the Personal and Social Development aspects of the National Curriculum.
This will help the school to strengthen the already existing subject-based teaching at Year 6 level in Art, PE, Science and Technology and PSD and to further extend it to Years 4 and 5. While for Art and PE the pupils can already make use of special rooms, through this initiative they will now also be able to acquire hands-on experience in the Science and PSD Room. The children will hopefully reap great benefits in these identified areas.
The setting up and furbishing of this room has cost well over Lm10,000. The room is furnished with modern and sophisticated equipment which includes a multi-media projector, an electric screen, a smart board, a technology bench, white goods and others.
All this would not have been made possible had it not been for the unending support forthcoming from the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools. A special word of thanks also goes to the staff, school council and parents for organising several fund-raising activities in aid of this project. Besides, the Smart Board has been heavily sponsored by Jos. Vincenti & Co. who also provided the necessary expertise to lecture teachers on its use.
The room was inaugurated on December 6 by Transport and Communication Minister Censu Galea. Also present were Mellieha mayor John Buttigieg, who is also a member of the staff, Paul Attard, Permanent Secretary for Education, and the parish priest of Mellieha, Fr Karm Tanti, who blessed the room.
