A musical drama based on the July 1551 attack on Gozo by the Turks and Gozo's popular legend of Don Bernardo de Opuo's resistance and death is being produced by the Gozo and Comino branch of Din l-Art Ħelwa.
Directed by Terry Shaw and based on the book by David Crewe, this tale of tragedy and heroism in the English language will be staged on St Michael Bastion, the Citadel, Victoria, on July 31 at 9 p.m. The bastion is the actual location where the historic event took place and the representation will take place within days of that fatal attack 458 years ago.
The main performers will be Ludwig Galea, Georgina Gauci and Mary Rose Mallia backed by a 40-strong chorus comprising mainly Gozitan singers from local choirs and featuring Maltese folk singing in English.
Gozitan artist, Paul Stellini will be in attendance and, apart from exhibiting his works, he will also be capturing the evening on canvas.
All funds raised will be in aid of the restoration and upkeep of the many historic sites held in guardianship by Din l-Art Ħelwa in Gozo and Comino, namely the Santa Marija Tower and Battery on Comino, and the Dwejra and Isopu coastal watchtowers in Gozo.
The performance has been made possible with the support of the Ministry for Gozo and the Gozo Cultural Office.
