The 14th annual 100-hour-plus music marathon, for charity kicks off at BJ's Nightclub, Paceville, on Easter Monday, April 21, at 5 p.m.
The marathon will, like last year, raise funds for WOW (Wishing Others Well), the social arm of Paceville's Millennium Chapel. WOW helps people with any type of problem and often acts as a reference point for other professional services.
Over the years the marathon has raised over Lm90,000 for several causes like Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Cash for Cancer, Eden Foundation, Torball, Suret il-Bniedem, and the Institute for Brain-Injured Children (IBIC). The organisers are now calling for volunteer musicians to perform at the marathon. Musicians of any style of music, including jazz, rock, pop, blues, Maltese folklore, and classical, are welcome to put their names down to be included in the roster. New talent and emerging musicians are also urged to participate.
"Besides its charitable aim, the marathon also has a cultural aspect - the preservation of live music as a form of entertainment. The event is also a good platform for new talent," BJ's Philip Fenech said.
He also said that this year the marathon would be held in memory of two musicians who died since last year's event - bassist Bernard Scerri, a member of the marathon organising committee who dedicated most hours to the event, and Sonny Monte, who performed at every marathon.
Musicians interested in taking part in the marathon are asked to call at BJ's in Ball Street after 10 p.m. or call Mr Fenech on 9949-3534.
