Malta's first registered trade union - the Malta Union of Teachers - recently held a series of activities to mark its founding by Antonio Galea 90 years ago on November 22, 1919.

The activities included a Mass at St Dominic parish church, Valletta, celebrated by Archbishop Paul Cremona, followed by a reception at the Casino Maltese, which was attended by President George Abela, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat.

In his speech, MUT president John Bencini thanked all past Education ministers, in particular Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. During his period as Education Minister, teachers were awarded professional status.
