The Malta Union of Teachers yesterday lifted the directives it had issued to all teaching grades instructing them not to enter marks on exam scripts and not to hand in the results to the school administration or any other official.

The directive was issued on June 12 in a dispute over the new collective agreement for government teachers and the recruitment of facilitators.

MUT general secretary Joseph DeGiovanni said yesterday the MUT council has decided to lift the directives because it felt that the discussions which had taken place at an "informal level could lead to concrete solutions".

He said it was not appropriate to comment further at this stage.

In a statement issued last night, the MUT said that all the teachers should submit the annual examination marks to school heads by Thursday.

Primary school heads will then classify students according to the results they obtained in their final exams in the shortest time possible.

The results will be sent to the parents of children in primary schools by mid-October and by the end of October for those in secondary schools.

The MUT will be explaining to school heads and assistant heads exactly what was agreed with the education authorities at a meeting to be held at the Teachers' Institute in Valletta tomorrow at 5.30 p.m.
