The Malta Union of Teachers has requested an urgent meeting with the Education Directorates because of tension among learning support and kindergarten assistants.

It said in a statement that a number of supply learning support assistants who obtained their diploma in inclusive education last December had not yet been given the opportunity to apply for the post of regular LSA’s II . This meant that they were being denied a proper salary. This situation was creating a sense of frustration and de-motivation amongst dedicated members of staff who pursued further studies at personal expense and sacrifice, MUT said.

It said there also seemed to be confusion after the Public Service Commission issued the results for learning support assistants II as a number of supply kindergarten assistants who were eligible to apply for this post were not informed that their certificate was comparable to a diploma. Some had their application accepted while that of others was refused.

Moreover, supply kindergarten assistants were still awaiting the publication of results for the post of KGA’s I . The interviews were held in August and September of last year.
