The Malta Union of Teachers has written to the secretary of the European Trade Union Committee for Education Martin Romer complaining about the suspension of funds for participation in EU programmes.

The MUT told Mr Romer that the union was concerned about the hardship faced by around 550 participants, mostly students and teachers, as a result of Malta’s suspension from participation in the EU Youth in Action and Life Long Learning programmes.

“Participation in these programs involves a lot of commitment and preparation work so one can easily understand the frustration of these participants.

“Whilst the MUT acknowledges that money of the European citizens should be spent wisely and that the expenditure should be transparent, it remarks that it is unfair that teachers and students have to suffer the consequences for administrative shortcomings.

“Now that the Maltese authorities have conducted an inquiry on the matter and remedial action is being taken we gently ask for your assistance.

“Your influence and contacts may help in lifting the suspension from these programmes,” the MUT said.
