Myth Debunked: Will AI replace cancer surgeons?

It is a supplementary tool that supports these healthcare professionals

Surgeons often lack experience with artificial intelligence (AI), which can lead to confusion or resistance to its adoption in their practice. The steep learning curve associated with AI concepts and technical jargon may hinder quick understanding.

Additionally, many surgeons are sceptical about AI’s benefits, especially if they feel it challenges their expertise. Concerns about patient data security arise, as AI systems require large datasets containing sensitive information, risking privacy breaches.

Technical issues with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) or video conferencing could also disrupt training. To address these challenges, DISSECT will offer workshops on AI in surgery.

These workshops will include practical demonstrations and simulations, highlighting how AI enhances surgical planning and decision-making, while reinforcing that AI is a supplementary tool that supports, rather than replaces, the surgeon’s expertise.
