Myth Debunked: Is the Y chromosome shrinking and will it disappear?

It has significantly shrunk since its evolutionary origins

There is a long-standing misconception that the human Y chromosome is slowly vanishing due to ancient gene loss.

It’s true that the Y has significantly shrunk since its evolutionary origins, losing hundreds of genes over millions of years, but recent research shows it has since stabilised.

In fact, studies demonstrate that the Y has maintained a consistent set of essential genes for male development and fertility over the past 25-30 million years.

In 2023, the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) consortium fully sequenced the human Y chromosome for the first time, uncovering previously missing regions and identifying new functional genes.

Additionally, global genomic analyses show strong conservation, not degradation.

The notion of its disappearance, although popular in online discussions, is scientifically outdated. The Y chromosome remains a vital and enduring part of human biology!
