When someone is given a Christian name it usually sticks to him for the rest of his life, even in the way one spells it.

If the name is Georg it should remain so and if it is George it should remain the same as well.

However, our much respected erstwhile prime minister, the late Dr Giorgio Borg Olivier's name, has now been given the name of Gorg.

The paradox of it all is that in the street which was once Victoria Avenue, where Dr Borg Olivier resided for many years with his family, the inscription on the plaque on the wall outside the house shows the name as Giorgio whereas the name of the street is Gorg Borg Olivier.

Can the authorities show respect to a person who achieved so much for Malta by naming the streets all around Malta as Giorgio and not Gorg Borg Olivier?

Why has no one ever commented on this unusual situation?
