The National Aquarium was inaugurated this evening by the prime minister, two years after its building started on the Qawra seafront.

The attraction features 130 species of fish - from large sharks to tiny clown fish. They are being kept in 26 tanks according to their usual sea temperature.

Most of the tanks replicate the Maltese coastline.

The largest tank, which is home to tropical fish, is 12 metres long and features a tunnel through which visitors can walk while fish swim above them.

The aquarium, which had a soft opening in August, also features an exhibition of Malta's maritime heritage.

The complex also includes the Cafe del Mar reef club, a landscaped belvedere, a merchandise outlet and catering facilities.

It is run by Marine Aquatic Limited, made up of a consortium by  Ebcon, Elbros and Marinescape. The €15m project was partly funded by the EU.

The aquarium is open every day from 10a.m. to 10 p.m. Ticket prices are €12.90 for adults and €6 for children. Children under the age of five enter free of charge.
