I feel it is my duty to explain to Mr Frank Mercieca why the sign at the blood bank in St Luke's Square reads Bank tad-Demm Nazzjonali and not Bank Nazzjonali tad-Demm.

The reason is simple. Bank tad-demm is a complex noun like ghasfur tal-bejt.

Similary, just as we say ghasfur tal-bejt sabih (not meaning that the terrace is beautiful), we say Bank tad-Demm Nazzjonali (not meaning that the blood is national).

Moreover that sign has been standing there for around 25 years and before it was installed a top expert in the Maltese language was consulted.

Finally I want to thank Mr Mercieca for bringing up the subject of blood banking in the media as it might help remind someone to go and donate blood.
