When someone of Dr Mario Tabone-Vassallo's reputation leaves an institution, it is time to seriously ask why. My contacts in the field were all very excited and optimistic about the new visions he gave to the National Orchestra.

I am concerned that the National Orchestra was starved of funds while the Manoel Theatre may have been profligate. I am surprised that the National Orchestra could have done so much with the little (relative to needs) that it was given. How come the National Orchestra never got a mention in the opera season at the Manoel when it turns out that it was the main financial sponsor?

Why is it that not more Maltese conductors have access to our one orchestra? Is it true that the wonderful Joseph Calleja had offered to sing L'Amico Fritz and that Miriam Cauchi had been virtually promised the lead in it, only for others to end up singing the roles? What is happening?
