The National Pool at Tal' Qroqq will be reopened on Monday after extensive maintenance and upgrading works as part of a €550,000 project.

Parliamentary Secretary for Sports Clyde Puli inspected the works this morning and welcomed the fact that works are being completed on time.

He said that the works had also included an extension of the fitness centre, the installation of CCTV cameras and improvement to the Squash courts. New showers, water filters and heat exchangers were installed.

Mr Puli said the sports complex cost the government €1.7 million in running costs every year. During winter the pool's water temperature is maintained at 26.5 degrees Celsius, a process which costs €600,000. As a result, prices for use of the pool are subsidised.

While the National Pool was closed, the Malta Sports Council rented the MFA pool to enable the national swimming team to continue to train ahead of its forthcoming international commitments.
