Caravaggio 400, an initiative of the Caravaggio Foundation and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, will mark the 400th anniversary of the most brilliant chapter in the history of Maltese art - the transfer to Malta of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

A fugitive from Papal Rome, he arrived in Malta from Naples in 1607.

Caravaggio 400 is the umbrella organisation that is coordinating a national calendar of events. The programme is scheduled to be launched in March.

It aims to celebrate Caravaggio's presence on the island through a number of coordinated events and initiatives over 2007 and 2008.

The events are being organised and run by different institutions but the entire calendar will be presented as a national programme. It is being coordinated by the Caravaggio Foundation and the MCCA, within the Tourism and Culture Ministry, which came up with the initiative, together with the support of the University of Malta.

One event has already celebrated the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio's stay in Malta. A lecture was organised by Din l-Art Helwa and delivered by Keith Sciberras earlier on in the week.
