€15m Naxxar distribution centre to boost electricity supply for 12,000 consumers
Project is part of wider upgrades to strengthen Malta's power network
Works are underway at a new distribution centre in Naxxar that will serve up to 12,000 consumers strengthening the electricity supply in Naxxar, Għargħur, and surrounding localities.
Visiting the centre, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said this “crucial project” will ensure a “stable and sustainable electricity supply” and will have a similar capacity to that of the one currently being built in Siġġiewi.
The centre, which will cost “around €15 million” is being funded through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Apart from Naxxar and Siġġiewi, Enemalta is currently undertaking several other projects and is expanding and modernising the medium-voltage system by increasing distribution sources, which will enhance the system’s flexibility and supply resilience.
One of the projects currently underway is the expansion of the Msida Distribution Centre, where extensive works are being carried out to double its existing capacity.
Expansion works are also ongoing at the St Andrew’s Distribution Centre, where capacity will be increased to strengthen connections in the surrounding regions.
“These projects form part of a long-term vision for Malta to have an electricity infrastructure that is robust, flexible, and ready to address new challenges related to climate change, transport electrification, and economic development,” a government statement said.
