Neil Agius begins his Gozo 7 swim challenge
Agius aims to swim around Gozo each day for a week for around 15 hours
Endurance athlete Neil Agius has begun his latest challenge, aiming to swim around Gozo seven times in seven consecutive days.
Dubbed the Gozo 7, the challenge began at 6am on Sunday, with Agius setting off from Ramla Bay. He was immediately met with a 1.5-metre swell and winds of around 15 knots.
Each day, Agius will swim a full loop around Gozo, a distance of around 42km, spending about 13 to 15 hours in the water daily. Over the course of the week, he aims to swim a total of 294km.
“This time it is not for a world record but to explore what it means to be more human,” Agius wrote on social media over the weekend. “To listen, to understand limits, and to find ways to grow stronger every day.”
Described as a “tribute to human endurance”, the Gozo 7 seeks to inspire others by demonstrating that mental and physical resilience can be strengthened through persistence.
“The Gozo 7 is not about becoming superhuman. It is about discovering what happens when we reach our limits, how we recover, and how we show up again the next day,” he said.
Ahead of the challenge, Agius outlined a set of rules he will follow: no wetsuits, flotation devices or contact with the accompanying boat. He will wear only a swimsuit, cap and goggles.
He will not rest on any surface while eating. Instead, food will be passed to him using a stick with a Tupperware container attached, while liquids will be thrown to him on ropes to ensure he keeps a safe distance from the boat.
Wetsuits are typically used by long-distance swimmers for warmth, buoyancy, and protection, often improving speed and shielding against sun, wind and jellyfish stings.
Each swim will start at a different point on the island. On the first day, Agius will swim from Ramla to Hondoq. On the second, he will begin at Hondoq and finish at Mġarr ix-Xini.
Unlike previous endurance efforts, Agius will only swim during daylight hours and return to land to rest overnight. His support team is made up of 18 people.
Last year, Agius completed a 140km non-stop swim around Malta, Gozo and Comino, swimming for 52 hours. Hundreds gathered to welcome him at Għar Lapsi.
The Gozo 7 is supported by partners GO, VisitMalta, VisitGozo, Kia, Maypole, Rise Physio, Bon Charge, BodyWorks and Dr Juice.
