The Gozo Cathedral in Victoria will have a set of five new bells installed in time for the feast of Santa Marija in August.

The contract for the new bells was signed recently by the archdeacon, Mgr Giovanni B. Gauci and by the archpriest, Mgr Joe Vella on behalf of the cathedral and by Gerald Flatters and Kenneth Cauchi on behalf of bell manufacturers John Taylor Bellfounders Ltd of Loughborough, UK, who also cast the 12-tonne bronze bell of the Malta Siege Memorial.

The largest of the five bells has a diameter of 1,955 mm and weighs 4,275 kilogrammes while the diameter of the smallest one is 800 mm. It weighs 310 kilogrammes.

A Gozo Cathedral spokesman said the need for the new bells had long been felt. The existing bells were restored at the Malta Drydocks some 25 years ago.

The decision to buy the new bells had the full approval of Gozo Bishop Mgr Nikol Cauchi.

The old bells will now be kept at the Cathedral Museum.
