Maltapost has appointed Stephen Sultana as its new chief executive officer, with effect from October 1.

The appointment is the result of an agreement reached between shareholders that the future management of the company would be based on a more permanent management structure rather than on an external management agreement.

New Zealand company Transend Worldwide Ltd, a shareholder in Maltapost, last February agreed to relinquish the management of the company by September. The government is the other majority shareholder.

Mr Sultana, 42, will replace Robert Lake. Married with two children, he graduated BA from the Faculty of Management Studies of the University of Malta in 1985 and MBA from the University of Bath, England in 1988.

He joins Maltapost after having been involved in trade and industrial promotion over a 15-year span. Mr Sultana's last posting was as chief executive officer at Metco, a post he has held since 1995. Prior to that, he was manager of Metco's export marketing division.

Commenting on his new post, Mr Sultana said he looked upon running Maltapost as a great challenge. "I know there are issues that need to be resolved and this is the sort of service industry where we face stiff competition. With a good management team and support from the staff, I am confident we can face these challenges ahead of us."

Another appointment within Maltapost, also in line with the agreement between shareholders regarding the future management of the company, is that of general manager for postal services. This post has been taken up by Teddy Cilia, former senior manager human resources, who replaces Martyn Penty.
