Joe Zammit Tabona is to be appointed chairman of the Malta Stock Exchange for a three-year term, The Times has learnt.
Mr Zammit Tabona, 61, takes over from Alfred Mallia who has asked not to be reappointed, according to sources.
It is not yet known whether Mr Zammit Tabona will retain his post as chairman of Malta Enterprise.
The government is expected to make a formal announcement of the new appointments shortly, possibly even today.
Mr Zammit Tabona, a chartered accountant, has been very active in professional and constituted bodies. He served as president of the Federation of Industry between 1990 and 1992 and again between 2000 and 2003.
He was then appointed chairman of the Malta Development Corporation, the Malta External Trade Corporation and the Institute for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprise, whose functions have been absorbed by Malta Enterprise.
Mr Mallia was one of the longest-serving government chairmen, heading the stock exchange since 1999.
