Joseph Church, the outgoing Secretary to the Presidency, has been appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner by the government.

The appointment was discussed with the opposition, but no agreement was reached.

Informed sources said Mr Church was proposed by the government. The Opposition proposed two other people, but the government went ahead with its preference.

Mr Church joined the public service in 1977 and was Director-General in the Ministry of Health before being appointed Secretary to the Presidency four years ago.

He studied Diplomacy at the University of Malta between 1996 and 1998 and  Management and Human Resources between 2002 and 2004.

The government thanked outgoing Chief Electoral Commissioner Salv Gauci, who is retiring at the end of his term but will continue to serve as consultant to the Electoral Commission.
