Environment Day last Saturday had a special meaning for the Biological Conservation Research Foundation (BICREF).
This year's United Nations Environment Programme's theme was the Sea and Oceans of the World - a cause supported by BICREF. And on that day the organisation was also presented with a dinghy, engine and trailer to assist it in its marine work.
The presentation took place at the Portomaso Marina in the presence of several young people who will be taking part in BICREF's research and awareness activities this summer.
The equipment was sponsored by MECCA and General Soft Drinks.
BICREF is assisting in a cetacean and turtle survey and coastal biodiversity research.
It has also involved itself with the education of children and adults in the belief that people of all ages need to reinforce their awareness to grow with a better appreciated, valued and safeguarded environment.
The foundation said marine conservation research and action needed to be promoted in every possible way. Everyone could do their bit to help the marine environment. One could use water in a more responsible manner and be careful what to throw down sinks, for example.
BICREF members are voluntary workers and sponsorships are wholly utilised to cover research costs.
Examples of BICREF work include a photographic exhibition of dolphins in Maltese waters; eco-tourism documentaries; news clips on marine environmental matters; awareness-raising on issues relevant to safeguarding marine ecosystems and vulnerable species; and interviews and public talks on marine resources and habitats. BICREF has managed to involve an increasing number of people who use the sea, such as fishermen, sailing crews, Gozo ferry crews, the Armed Forces of Malta, the Civil Protection Department and scuba divers, in reporting relevant information about the marine environment.
The organisation urged the public to support environmental entities, because they would be supporting work towards a better environment for present and future generations.
The foundation's address is PO Box 30, Hamrun; e-mail: bicref@hotmail.com.
