The premises of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) of Malta in Sliema was recently inaugurated by Education Minister Dolores Cristina.
The ESU is part of the national effort to raise the standard of spoken English in Malta, Ms Cristina said. "In a country that depends on English in areas like tourism, culture and education, the ESU Malta had a vital role to play."
ESU recently launched a pilot 'Arm of Support' project at a Żabbar primary school to expose four-and-five-year-old children to spoken English, and debating societies at the University and elsewhere.
ESU chairman Martin Scicluna said a branch was being established in Gozo and Richard Whale was recruited as director of education and administration.
