Kevin Cutajar of Xaghra was recently elected first president of the Gozitan Federation for Persons with Disabilities.
He is a fourth-year law student at the University of Malta and is PRO of the Gozo Aid for the Visually Impaired and of the Gozo NGO council.
This new federation brings together organisations and entities which work for the disabled in Gozo.
They are Fondazzjioni Arka, Eden Foundation, Friends of the Gozo Adult Training Centre, Gozo Aid for the Visually Impaired, Gozo Association for the Deaf and Sannat School Special Needs Unit.
The aim of the federation is to foster co-operation between its organisations to look into problems affecting persons with disabilities; to arouse public awareness about persons with disabilities and their families and to recommend measures to the authorities to help persons with disabilities.
Mr Cutajar said the federation is also aiming to set up a one-stop shop in Gozo for those seeking help. He added that the Church and state have promised to support the federation, although they did not specify how.
