New Gordon Borg works explore abstract cubism

The artist’s approach draws on the Cubist tradition pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque

The sixth solo art exhibition by Gordon Borg, titled Abstract Cubism (Orphism) presents 60 new artworks, including both paintings and wood sculptures, at the Nationalist Party’s Dar Centrali, Pietà, and runs until November 6.

Borg’s art is rooted in Abstract Cubism, a style that allows him to “express the world around him” through geometric form and vivid colour. As Prof. George Cassar of the University of Malta observes, “art is the pursuit of expressing one’s aspirations, imagination, objectives and targets,” and Borg’s work embodies this unending search for expression.

Borg’s approach draws on the Cubist tradition pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who “challenged the familiar and converted it into geometric shapes to then reconstruct them into a new way of how to view reality.” His compositions break down subjects into simple elements – “point, line, plane, circle, sphere, cylinder and cone” – and reassemble them to capture “multiple perspectives at the same time.”

Cassar highlights Borg’s evolution toward Orphism, an offshoot of Cubism defined by vibrant colour and rhythm. Through “the introduction of bright and contrasting colours and a musical sensation to the composition,” Borg infuses his paintings and wood sculptures with motion and life. His works, Cassar writes, are “a joy for the eyes, a challenge for the mind, an arousal for the spirit.” They “offer a fresh look at life, a new perspective that may at times need determination and sharpness to comprehend.”

Borg’s Abstract Cubism (Orphism) exhibition invites viewers to encounter art that is, in Cassar’s words, “full of life, imbued with movement… it wants to tell its own story.”
