No more excessive homework?

A new national policy seeks to refocus on homework quality rather than quantity

The education authorities have announced a national policy on homework focused on less quantity, age adaptability and maintaining a balance in children's lives.

Education Minister Clifton Grima told a conference that while homework was important, it needed to reflect current needs. He stressed that standards needed to be maintained and the policy is aimed at more effective teaching and keeping a balance in children's lives.

The policy is based on four pillars: practice to consolidate classroom work; exploration to encourage pupils to go beyond classroom work and follow their interests; application in everyday use and integration of the various subjects.

The policy aims to ease pressure and stress on schoolchildren. It also underlines adapting homework to the age of the pupils and, in some cases, their particular circumstances.

How will homework change?

Homework will be introduced gradually from Year 2 "through multi-sensory, developmentally appropriate and reading-based activities". There will be an emphasis on creativity and exploration.

In later primary school years, educators will be expected to coordinate among themselves to avoid an excessive level of homework.

The policy also called for a more balanced homework load, with no increased loads during weekends or school holidays. Homework should also be planned so that it does not interfere with co-curricular activities, family time, rest and play.

It encourages balanced parental involvement while seeking to avoid reliance on adults. It also provides for flexibility, particularly in cases where pupils are unlikely to find home help or support.

Ministry officials said the purpose of the policy was for homework to be meaningful and varied, helping and encouraging pupils to be responsible and independent.

The new policy builds on another document issued two years ago and will be reviewed every four years.
