New look and benefits for Heritage Malta passports
Between 2019 and 2024, 303,000 visitors used agency’s two schemes
Heritage Malta is updating both its Student Passport and Senior Passport, featuring new designs and benefits, building on strong public uptake.
Between January 2019 and December 2024, a total of 303,000 visitors used the two schemes. This initiative reinforces the agency’s ongoing commitment to making Malta’s rich cultural heritage accessible and engaging for all generations.
The Student Passport now has a fresh, vibrant design inspired by the mosaics at the Domvs Romana in Rabat, one of Malta’s most iconic archaeological sites. Alongside the passport’s new look, more sites have been added to the list where students can collect stamps, making each visit an even more rewarding adventure.
Students holding the previous version of the passport can continue to enjoy access to all included sites, without the need for replacement.
The Senior Passport has also received a fresh new look, featuring Gozo’s Ġgantija Archaeological Park. Beyond its updated design, the passport now offers even greater flexibility – holders can bring along any two accompanying persons residing in Malta, extending the previous youth-only restriction.
To enrol, seniors simply need to visit their local council with their ID card. The passport will then be posted to them within 10 working days, and for every eight stamps collected, participants will receive a special reward.
Noel Zammit, Heritage Malta’s chief executive officer, said: “Heritage only thrives when it’s experienced. The renewed passports are more than just access tools – they represent our belief that culture should be part of daily life.
“By encouraging exploration across all ages, we’re ensuring that Malta’s heritage remains not only preserved, but truly lived and enjoyed. The youngest and oldest generations can enjoy our historical sites for free. The resounding success of this scheme has spurred the agency to plan to open it further, attracting other age groups beyond students and seniors.”
Both passports provide free and unlimited access to Heritage Malta’s museums and sites, with the exception of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and Underground Valletta. Through recent collaborations, several new destinations have also been introduced, including St John’s co-cathedral in Valletta, the Malta Railway Museum in Birkirkara and the Malta Museum of Football at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
