The Malta Canoe Federation (MCF) recently held its Annual General Meeting at its premises in Marsamxett.
A new committee was elected by the present members with Julian Mamo voted in as president by popular support.
Craig Wightman, the outgoing president, thanked everyone for a hard year's work. Wightman pointed out that last year saw foreign and local participation in the National Championships, a successful charity event on May 1 and two Round Malta Challenges.
Participation figures in last year's events show that the popularity of canoeing is growing in Malta with new members taking a keen interest in the sport's various disciplines, namely touring, racing and polo.
"The new committee is tackling this year's challenges head-on with the development of a youth programme for secondary school students a top priority," the MCF said in a statement. "A canoe polo league is also in the offing as part of the federation's plans to expand the local racing calendar."
The MCF thanked the outgoing committee members for their contribution to the sport over the past year.
The new committee is made up as follows: Dr Julian Mamo - president; Alex Rizzo - vice-president; Dr Nicholas Valenzia - secretary; Damian Schembri - treasurer; Christopher Camilleri - technical director; Craig Wightman - international secretary; Nicola Borg Costanzi - public relations officer.
