Canon John Muscat has been appointed parish priest of Fontana, the Gozo Curia said. He takes over from Fr Joseph Bajada.

Canon Muscat, who is from Sannat, was ordained priest by Pope John Paul II in Rome on May 31, 1984 and worked in Camden New Jersey, his duties including the promotion of vocations, links between Jews and Catholics and director of Catholic Relief Services for the missions in Brasil.

He was also assistant spiritual director in the seminary of St Charles in Philadelphia.

Fr Muscat followed a four year clinical psychology course in the University Pennsylvania.

He returned to Malta in 2007 and was chaplain of the Gozo Cathedral, rector of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church in Xlendi and an official of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal in Gozo.
